We consider the Chew Toy to be the ideal “step-up groveler or hybrid”, as it will handle a much broader range of waves and conditions than most other boards in those categories. The new Chew Toy features a few modern tweaks to improve the performance and versatility; a pulled in nose, refined single to double with vee off the tail bottom and performance rail. The deck configuration allows us to pack in some additional liters for better paddling proficiency, and the tighter tail template and additional rocker, when compared to traditional grovelers, improve the performance.

I typically ride a 5’6” heckler or a 5’10” Yes Thanks, but I got this 6’0” Chew Toy for soft racy point break style waves and long paddles back out. As I broke it in and tried on different waves I found myself riding it bigger and hollowed surf. I set it up as a quad and after pushing it harder and harder and somehow it’s become my step up barrel board. It holds and handles unbelievably well in 8-12’ hollow outer banks and Puerto Rican juice. It also works in the mushy stuff...
Custom ordered a Chew Toy in an EPS blank with the goal of 22 liters of volume (for my Ewok stature and weight of 5’5” 130lbs). The end result was a 5’2” x 18.45” x 2.19” coming in at 22.5 liters. The board is great in small, clean 2-3+ ft surf. The board is a little corky and tends to track with surface bump/texture. I ride a different poly board instead if the wind is onshore. Loved the piranha, love this board when conditions are optimal, but the surf is on the micro side. Tons of fun as it is one of the fastest boards right from the start. Makes sections that my other groveler cannot.
Have this board in the original 2017 construction (stringerless, EPS Epoxy, grab rails) and have been enjoying it in 2'-3'+ California Beach Break. I'd say their "step-up groveler" moniker is about right because I don't think this board generates it's own speed, and needs a little size & push in the surf, or a good surfer, to keep it moving. I take out other boards when it's tiny 1'-2' but think this board is great in anything bigger than that, and surfs like a high performance board with its rocker and pulled in tail. The fuller nose and additional volume compared to the typical high performance short board helps it in smaller surf, and makes it a bit more forgiving for novice surfers. I'm 5' 11" ~185 lbs and am very happy with the 6' 2".
I'm 200 pounds got a 6'0 to surf everyday average waves ( FL ) this thing rips. Flys down the line feels super lively and springy, bottom and top turns like a dream. I was a little skeptical at the beginning, second time I rode it ( today ) got it dialed in. Love this board, it's super fast in mushy sections and goes vertical with ease. Easy board to whip around, feels so light. Hides the volume good under the chest and has pretty awesome thin rails that's my fav feature, turns really easy. Love it. Sick board Rusty!!
